Beard's 3 Goals Lead Leesburg, 4-1, January 7, 1994

Leesburg used three goals from right forward Becky Beard to help show how far it has progressed this season in capturing a 4-1 victory over Gainesville Eastside on Thursday night in a girls soccer game at Hubert O. Dabney Stadium.

Leesburg (8-4-3) lost to Eastside (7-5-4), 1-0, in its second game of the season but, since then, Leesburg has moved Cat Lockett from midfield to striker and the result is a better offensive attack
Lockett scored Leesburg's other goal.

''We have played together since eighth-grade, so we know what kinds of moves and runs each other is going to make,'' Beard said about Lockett's move to the front line. ''We have been working well together.''

Leesburg won for the third time in as many games.

Freshman goalkeeper Kelly O'Brien, just brought up to varsity this week, barely missed her third consecutive shutout.

Eastside's Karah Smith ended that opportunity when she received a pass from Janelle Delphino in the middle of the penalty area and put a shot over O'Brien's outstretched hands 7:47 into the second half.

Beard's goals give her 22 for the season. Since moving Lockett to the front line, Leesburg has outscored its opponents, 22-1.

''I think we are starting to play a little better,'' Leesburg coach Ken Fedak said. ''The difference is that we have gotten a little more experience working together.

''I think what they (the Rams) were doing tonight is they were going with a 3-4-3, trying to control the midfield and that gave Becky and our other forwards a lot of room.''

Jackets In College: Samford Is Next Step For Bosshardt, March 15, 2001

By Joe Williams of The Sentinel Staff
March 15, 2001

LEESBURG -- When Leesburg's Lindsey Bosshardt's senior soccer season began late in the fall, playing soccer in college was not high on her priority list.

But as the season's games began dwindling away, continuing her playing career became more important.
On Wednesday, Bosshardt signed with the Samford University's women's soccer program, where she will join former Leesburg teammate Anna Braun.

"At the beginning of the season, it [playing in college] wasn't too important, but at the end of the season, I couldn't picture myself not playing soccer,'' Bosshardt said. "Soccer is something I have always done. I started playing soccer in seventh grade and I have played every season since.''

Despite playing as a defender for much of the season, Bosshardt still scored six goals and had three assists this season. She may eventually move into the role of a midfielder in college.

"She will do great at Samford wherever they play here,'' Leesburg Coach Emily Morgan said. "She transitions easily and I have confidence that she will do excellent. She is really looking forward to playing in college and she definitely has what it takes to be successful.

"She is a very well-rounded player, with one of her main strengths being her versatility.''

Bosshardt made a trip to Samford, located in Birmingham, Ala., in September and has been there to watch a few games.

Though she also considered going to Florida State University and Clemson solely for academic purposes, Samford always was her first choice.

It is a choice that her mother agrees with.

"I'm thrilled it all worked out,'' Sally Bosshardt said. "She absolutely fell in love with the campus when she visited there in September. I think she would have gone there even if she wasn't playing soccer.''

Though Bosshardt went into this season with some questions about whether she wanted to play soccer in college, her mother said she started working toward that goal a couple of years ago.

"I really think in her sophomore year she started to work to try to bring herself up to the level to play soccer in college,'' Sally Bosshardt said. "She is very competitive.''

Having Braun, a close friend and former high school teammate, playing for Samford helped Bosshardt in her decision to go to Samford. She earned a spot on the team through videotapes she sent to Coach Barry Spitzer.

Samford finished last season with an 8-8-1 regular-season record.

"I am really excited about it,'' Lindsey Bosshardt said. "I have visited there and watched a couple of games. I sent him some tapes and he [Spitzer] called me and told me I was on the team.''

Missed opportunities cool off Nature Coast, November 29, 2011

Nature Coast's Emily Myers gets low to take a shot in front of Leesburg's Sarah Englehardt.
By CHRIS BERNHARDT
Hernando Today

Through the first six matches of the season, it seemed Nature Coast had finally shaken the offensive shortcomings that had plagued it in the past.
The Lady Sharks entered Tuesday’s home match against Class 3A, District 6 foe Leesburg having outscored its previous opponents 31-1.

Neither of those numbers would change on that night, as the two squads played to a scoreless tie in a battle of district unbeatens.

“I think for the most part we have finished very well leading up to this game and that’s definitely what we struggled with tonight,” Nature Coast Head Coach Lisa Masserio said.

Nature Coast's Ashley Chevalier (10) wards off a Leesburg attacker during Tuesday's 3A-6 contest.
“We’re moving in the right direction. But it’s disappointing, considering the number of goals we’ve finished off over the course of the season, to be shut out.”

At least for the Lady Sharks (6-0-1 overall, 3-0-1 3A-6), it didn’t come due to lack of scoring chances. They outshot the Yellow Jackets (4-1-2 overall, 2-0-1 3A-6), 13-3, and kept nearly all the action on Leesburg’s half of the field.

“We looked a little tentative at times in the box,” Masserio said. “The buildup now for district games is kind of a big deal. It’s teams we haven’t faced before, we haven’t seen, we don’t know very much about. Some of it is the anticipation of the unknown. I think we suffered from a lack of intensity at certain points in the game.”

The best offensive opportunity for either team came early on. Seven minutes in, Emily Myers was tripped up in the goal box and awarded a penalty kick.

Nature Coast's Victoria Wall (2) advances the ball versus Leesburg during a scoreless tie Tuesday evening.
However, Myers’ attempt landed in the arms of Leesburg keeper Sarah McKinney, one of her 13 saves in the contest.

“She normally plays well, but she kept us in this game tonight,” Leesburg Head Coach Israel Ramos said. “She’s a sophomore. She’s still got a lot to learn. But she was a beast out there tonight.

“Credit Nature Coast; they came at us, moved the ball, they tried everything. I was pleased with the level of play and the officiating was superb.”

“The good thing is we are creating a lot of opportunities,” Masserio said. “The past couple of years we were struggling to get there. That part I’m pleased with. The girls have worked really hard to keep moving the ball, move the ball quickly; make quick decisions.”

Meanwhile sophomore Samantha Oliveira had a relatively quiet night in net for the Lady Sharks, making three saves.

“I would have liked a little more pressure, but defensively we were solid,” Ramos said. “We still need to work on our midfield, build up and connect on the passes that will be vital to test the keepers.”

Next up: Eustis
Though this match had its own share of district implications, on Friday Nature Coast will travel to take on the club considered the favorite in 3A-6, Eustis.

“I think we have a few things we need to brush up on and work on because we may not get 30 opportunities against Eustis,” Masserio said. “I think we match up pretty well with them. It’s going to be a battle. Our defense will have to step up because they’ve got players that are outstanding.”
